Quartz, Onyx and Garnet class recently enjoyed a day trip to the Moorland Discovery Centre in the Peak District National Park as part of our science topic ‘seasonal change’. The children discussed the signs of winter that they see in nature and learned how this affects animals. We explored the surrounding countryside looking for animal footprints in the snow and collected natural materials to build a nest for a dormouse. This was followed by a very muddy walk through the beautiful surroundings. After lunch, the children had the opportunity to build a nest in teams and test which one kept the dormouse the warmest. The day finished with each child creating something that they had seen using clay, twigs, fern and leaves. We had some very impressive creations to take home!
