Reading & Phonics
“Teachers have taken a big interest in my son’s reading and he had made great progress.”
“Staff in class helped my son settle in really well when he came from Pakistan. They are so friendly, especially at pick up times.”
We love Maths!
“Maths is my favourite lesson. My teacher makes it so much fun!”
Aaminah, age 7
What are we studying?
During their time in Y2 the children have the opportunity to study a range of topics (these may vary from year to year), through their Literacy, Geography and History sessions including:
- Little Blue Planet: Investigating Earth
- The history of flight
- The Great Fire of London
- Carnival of the Animals
- Kings, Queens and their Castles
Reading & Writing
In Literacy we follow the Pie Corbett ‘Talk for Writing framework’. This helps the children to develop a good understanding of different structures of writing and access a range of genres. At the end of each topic children will use the features they have learnt about to write an independent piece. In addition to daily writing lessons, the children also have daily phonics and numeracy lessons.
To support their knowledge and love of reading, we have reciprocal reading sessions where all children read the same text. Each day a small section of the text is read and then children are guided through a cycle of predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising. This allows the children to develop confidence in their reading, access a text they might be not be able to on their own and to develop public speaking skills. We also have reading skills sessions where the focus is on the development of children’s comprehension skills.
SATS testing takes place throughout May.
Parents are advised to ensure their child attends school on all of these days.
Here at Tinsley Meadows we aim to promote a healthy lifestyle and a love of excersise. We expect all children to change into an appropriate PE kit when they do PE.
All children must bring full PE Kit into school, which should be in a named bag and must be kept in school every day:
• a white PE t-shirt
• black shorts or leggings
• a tracksuit for outdoor PE in cold weather
• a pair of trainers (Children are NOT allowed to wear trainers during the school day except in PE lessons. They must change into trainers for PE.)
PE days are as follows:
Onyx: Mondays and Wednesdays
Tanzanite: Wednesdays and Thursdays
Peridot: Wednesdays and Thursdays
Onyx: Mondays and Wednesdays
Tanzanite: Tuesdays and Thursdays
Peridot: Tuesdays and Thursdays
How to help your child in Year 2
The more children read the more fluent they become. Therefore we encourage children to read at home as much as possible. They can change their reading books each morning as they come into class and show their teacher their reading record from home. Each time a child reads at home they are given a sticker at school to collect which the children gain prizes for.
Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language. Ask your child what they have been learning in phonics and help to practise at home. Each child will be given a list of all the different sound combinations so they can practise at home.
Parents in Class
Regular parents events are planned to invlove parents in their children’s learning.
