Peridot & Tanzanite – Y2 | Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy

Peridot & Tanzanite

Year 2

The class teachers are Miss Bristow (Tanzanite) and Miss Dalton (Peridot). There are also 3 teaching assistants supporting the pupils who are Mrs Joanna Chojnacka, Miss Haleema Tabasum, Miss Rehana Khan and Mrs Sarah Shaw. Ryan Leith is an apprentice teaching assistant who also offers support.

What we do in our year: Peridot and Tanzanite base lots of their learning around interesting topics.

‘Where I live’ is our current topic in which we are looking at maps the countries within Great Britain. We will be learning all about our local area as well as England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

In literacy we will be writing our own stories based on the story of the amazing Spiderman. We will be looking at different superheroes and their powers. This is a really exciting topic which all children should enjoy!

Year Two’s science topics are the uses of everyday materials, animals and humans, living things and habitats and growing things. This term we are focusing on animals and hums. We will be investigating what humans and animals need to survive, what a healthy diet is and why we need to exercise. We will be taking a trip to Eureka to support and broaden our learning.

In addition to daily literacy, the children will also have daily phonics and numeracy. This is delivered in a structured way to support the children continual learning. This also allows the lesson content to be tailored to the needs of our pupils.

SPaG (Spelling punctuation and grammar) sessions are taught before each literacy lessons to deepen the children’s understanding of the English language and to enable them to fully understand written and verbal text.

We have daily reciprocal reading sessions where all children read the same text. Each day a small section is questioned and clarifies along with predictions made about what might happen next. This allows the children to develop confidence in their reading, access a text they might be able to own their own and to develop public speaking skills. This begins at 08-35 each morning.

Homework will be sent out on Fridays to be completed and brought back in for the following Friday. Children are encouraged to continue the work they do in school at home.

We welcome all parents and adults to speak to any of the adults in the classroom if you have any concerns, issues are questions about your child’s learning.

Peridot has P.E on Monday and Friday afternoons. Tanzanite has PE on Monday and Thursday afternoons. Children need their P.E kits in school at all times so that they can join in with gym, dance and games sessions.

During the year we encourage all children to attend our different after school clubs and lunchtime booster groups such as Maths Club or Handwriting club. Your child will be given more details about this during the term.

Homework will be sent out on Fridays to be completed and brought back in for the following Wednesday. Children are encouraged to continue the work they do in school at home so please support them with their daily reading, spellings and other homework activities.

Monday: Grammar Booster Group 3:15-4:00pm.

Wednesday: Maths Booster Group 3:15-3:45pm.

Please come into school and talk to use if you have any concerns, issues or questions about your child’s learning.
