On Monday 29th February, a group of children took part in a charity football tournament in order to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice as part of Biz Kids 2016. Three schools (Marlcliffe Primary, Manor Lodge and Tinsley Meadows) took part in the tournament at Park Academy School.
Each team played each other twice in the group stages with Marlcliffe and Tinsley Meadows finishing in the top two, getting a place in the final. Tinsley Meadows had to play a second place eliminator against a very good team from Manor Lodge Primary School which was a very tight game. Though Tinsley just edged the game, the Manor Lodge team did not give up till the final whistle.
All the games were played in a very good spirit and excellent sportsmanship was shown by all the children, whether they won or lost. There was a buzzing atmosphere on the pitch with lots of parents coming to support the cause, and the children had the pleasure of meeting Digby, the St Luke’s mascot.
All the children taking part in the tournament were given sponsorship forms to raise money for an amazing charity. The tournament has brought in close to £250 for the charity with some children yet to bring in their sponsorship money. It is amazing see how powerful sport can be in teaching children not only respect/sportsmanship but also how it can help those less fortunate than us by raising money.
The final was between Marlcliffe Primary and Tinsley Meadows; it was a very good contest with both set of players desperate to win. There was some very good football played from Tinsley but in the end Marlcliffe won 3-1.
Well played to all the children who took part! Thank you to Park Academy for providing the pitch free of charge and thank you to Manor Lodge Primary and Marlcliffe Primary for taking part.
